Wellbeing in the New Year
Each year we make resolutions to
improve our health, quit bad habits and make better use of our
time. No matter what your resolutions are, make sure you are
setting yourself up for success. Look at it as a goal, rather than
a resolution. Use the SMART goal setting technique to help you
continue healthy habits or quit the things that don't positively
contribute to your life.
- Specific - A specific goal has a much greater
chance of being accomplished than a general goal.
- Measurable - How much? How Many? Set concrete
criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment for each
goal.
- Attainable - When you identify goals that are
most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make
them come true.
- Realistic - To be realistic, a goal must
represent an objective toward which you are both willing
and able to work. A high goal is sometimes easier to reach
than a low one because a low goal employs low motivation.
- Timely - A goal should be grounded within a
time frame. With no time frame tied to it there's no sense of
urgency.
It's helpful to write out your goals
and each of the SMART steps. If you feel like you are challenging
yourself and you are afraid of failing, re-examine your goal and
write a plan for when you "fall off the wagon".
